However, there’s another enchanting side to this picturesque area in northeastern Spain: charming, family-run restaurants nestled in serene villages, perched atop rugged mountains or surrounded by sprawling farmland. Here, you won’t find flashy Michelin stars; instead, you’ll discover a delightful array of rustic dishes paired with exceptionally drinkable wines that are often hard to come by outside the region.
In these establishments, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, akin to dining at a dear friend’s home, where the hosts treat guests like family members catching up over a leisurely three-hour lunch. The drive to these hidden gems is part of the adventure, as the roads meander through rolling hills draped in vineyards, alongside lush, verdant mountains.

La Cueva del Chato
Located in the quaint village of Canillas de Río Tuerto, which boasts a mere population of 42, La Cueva del Chato is an inviting eatery housed within a converted tractor shed. The name “chato” translates to someone with a flat nose, and the chef, César Torrecilla, humorously notes that this descriptor doesn’t quite fit him. “That was my father,” he explains, adding with a smile, “I’m el chatito,” using the affectionate diminutive.
During my visit, I was accompanied by my wife Ivana, a native of Logroño, and her family — a total of six eager diners. By the end of our delightful meal, Ms. Hermosilla, César’s wife and the hostess of the establishment, had memorized all our names, adding a personal touch to the experience.
At La Cueva del Chato, you’ll find a delectable combination of flavors, such as a fresh salad adorned with delicate shavings of foie gras, resting on a bed of potatoes, apple, and candied pear, showcasing the culinary creativity that defines this remarkable restaurant.
