Dan Collins, a seasoned journalist known for his critical perspective on Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani’s actions surrounding the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, passed away at the age of 80 in Manhattan. His wife, Gail Collins, confirmed that he succumbed to complications of pneumonia and Covid at a local hospital.

Dan Collins had a distinguished career, having worked for United Press International and CBS News. He was also an accomplished author, with one of his notable works being “Grand Illusion: The Untold Story of Rudy Giuliani and 9/11” (2006), co-written with investigative reporter Wayne Barrett.

In their book, Collins and Barrett meticulously detailed the failures of the Giuliani administration to act on warnings following the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, which ultimately left the city vulnerable to the 9/11 attacks. They also shed light on Giuliani’s post-mayoral pursuits, portraying him as a “hero for hire” who capitalized on his crisis management reputation by establishing a consulting firm specializing in security.

Dan Collins and Wayne Barrett’s collaboration provided a critical examination of Giuliani’s leadership during the 9/11 crisis, revealing a narrative that diverged from the prevailing public perception of the former mayor’s actions.
