Founder David H. McConnell was just an ordinary salesman before becoming one of the pioneers of the modern direct selling industry.

His life story goes beyond commerce and highlights the importance of perseverance, innovative spirit.

David McConnell, born in 1858 in New York, took an early step into the business world.

Starting to work at a young age, McConnell was just a traveling book salesman. McConnell started distributing free perfume samples to female customers to increase the sales of his books. This strategy unexpectedly drew great interest, and McConnell realized that there was a great opportunity in the perfume business.

In 1886, McConnell founded the California Perfume Company.

The company was limited to only a few perfume and cosmetic products in its early years. However, McConnell’s vision was great; he aimed to help women establish their own businesses by adopting the direct selling model. This approach challenged the social norms of the time, allowing women to gain economic independence.

In 1892, the company hired its first representatives.

Miss PFE Albee was the first representative. Representatives earned income for themselves and the company by directly presenting and selling products at home. This innovative method achieved great success in a short time. In 1939, the company changed its name to Avon.

Empowering Women

David McConnell’s business model made a significant contribution to women’s economic empowerment. At that time, when women had a limited role in the business world, McConnell offered them the opportunity to establish their own businesses and be independent.

Avon representatives not only earned their own incomes but also took on an important role in society. He not only achieved commercial success but also brought about a social transformation.

In addition, Avon Women’s Foundation was established in 1955. By 1992, they raised awareness by selling ribbons for breast cancer. In 1998, they organized their first walks to raise funds for breast cancer.

While providing funds to the Gender-Based Violence Justice Institute to support women, programs are also organized against domestic violence.

Avon is still a supporter of all women behind brave decisions.

David McConnell passed away in 1937. However, his legacy continues to live on worldwide through millions of Avon representatives. Avon, as a brand that has grown and developed with McConnell’s vision, continues its pioneering role in empowering women and helping them gain economic independence.
