The European Union’s foreign policy chief has expressed strong condemnation of the recent violent attack carried out by Israeli settlers against the Palestinian village of Jit in the occupied West Bank. Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, took to social media platform X to share his concerns and announce his intentions to propose further sanctions targeting those who support such violent actions, including individuals within the Israeli government.

“Day after day, in an almost total impunity, Israeli settlers fuel violence in the occupied West Bank, thereby endangering any potential for peace,” Borrell stated. He emphasized the urgent need for the Israeli government to take immediate action to halt these unacceptable behaviors. “I confirm my intention to table a proposal for EU sanctions against violent settlers’ enablers, including some Israeli government members,” he concluded.

The attack on Thursday saw masked Israeli settlers storm the village of Jit, where they set homes and vehicles ablaze, according to reports from both Israeli and Palestinian media. The settlers also opened fire on residents and used tear gas, resulting in the tragic death of a 23-year-old Palestinian and leaving another individual in critical condition, as reported by Palestinian health officials and local authorities.

Additionally, at least two other individuals required medical attention for injuries sustained from stones thrown during the chaos, while a third person suffered from smoke inhalation and received assistance from the Palestinian Red Crescent.

In response to the violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the assault, describing it as an act he regards with “utmost severity.” He underscored the military’s responsibility to ensure security within the country, stating, “Those responsible for any offence will be apprehended and tried.” His administration has indicated that one civilian involved in the violence has already been detained, and an investigation is underway.

Thursday’s incident marks yet another heartbreaking chapter in the ongoing conflict, which has seen escalating violence since the onset of the recent conflict. According to reports, at least 633 Palestinians have lost their lives due to Israeli fire, with most casualties resulting from military operations in Palestinian cities and towns.
