Airlines Struggle to Recover from Major Tech Outage
Airlines are gradually making strides to mitigate the repercussions of a significant technology outage that caused widespread disruption to global travel on Friday. Despite their efforts, some delays and cancellations continued to impact travelers on Saturday.
According to FlightAware, a flight tracking service, approximately 3,400 flights to, from, and within the United States were canceled on Friday. This made it the most chaotic day for flight cancellations this year, surpassing the turmoil experienced on January 15, when airlines faced severe winter storms that resulted in nearly 3,200 cancellations.
Fortunately, the number of delays and cancellations on Saturday appeared to be significantly reduced compared to the previous day. By midday, airlines had canceled slightly over 1,000 flights, with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines among the most affected carriers, as reported by FlightAware.
In a statement, Delta expressed their commitment to customer service, stating, “Delta teams in airports, on board flights, on the phones, and in messaging are working tirelessly to care for customers as the airline works to reposition flight crews and aircraft following the disruption.” Most cancellations on Saturday were concentrated during the morning and early afternoon hours, according to Delta.
Several airlines have announced they will waive fees and fare differences, as well as provide refunds for passengers impacted by the outage. Additionally, the Transportation Department indicated that airlines may be required to compensate affected travelers for expenses related to food, lodging, and transportation.
The tech outage was triggered by a flawed software update issued by CrowdStrike, a prominent cybersecurity provider, affecting Microsoft devices. Shortly afterward, numerous airlines and various other businesses and institutions began experiencing significant technical failures. For airlines specifically, a variety of critical systems were impacted, including:
- Aircraft weight calculations
- Customer check-in processes
- Issuance of boarding passes
- Management of call center operations
This incident underscores the vulnerability of the aviation industry to technology-related disruptions and highlights the ongoing challenges airlines face in maintaining operational stability.
