Ukrainian Forces Repel Massive Russian Attack on Kyiv
On Monday, Ukrainian authorities reported that they successfully fended off a significant Russian assault on the capital, Kyiv, which occurred in the early hours of the morning. This marks the eighth attack on the city within a span of just over two weeks, indicating a concerning escalation in Russia’s ongoing air campaign against Ukraine’s capital.
Serhii Popko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, stated that Ukrainian defense forces managed to shoot down nearly two dozen Russian drones targeting the area. The Ukrainian air force further elaborated that they intercepted an impressive 53 out of 56 Russian drones during this latest assault.
Mr. Popko characterized this attack as particularly substantial compared to previous attempts, revealing that an air-raid alert was issued around 2 a.m., which remained active for approximately three and a half hours. The intensity of the assault was evident, although the precise claims of the Ukrainian military have yet to be independently verified, and there has been no official response from Russian authorities.
While the authorities reported that one woman sustained injuries from debris caused by a downed drone, they indicated there was no major damage to infrastructure in the capital. However, the Ukrainian government acknowledged that shelling of energy facilities in five additional regions resulted in temporary power outages over the past day.
Since the beginning of the month, Russia has notably intensified its attacks on Kyiv and other major cities. This surge in aggression began on September 2, coinciding with the start of the school year, when Russia unleashed a barrage of missiles targeting Kyiv and other urban centers.
