Ukraine Urges for Long-Range Weapons to Target Russian Military
Ukraine calls for long-range weapons to effectively target Russian military forces, emphasizing the need for enhanced military support to strengthen its defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions.
Ukraine’s Call for Long-Range Weapons
For several months, Ukraine has been advocating for the use of Western long-range weaponry to extend its strikes deeper into Russian territory. The Ukrainian government argues that possessing these advanced weapons is crucial for targeting military installations that harbor Russian warplanes and launch missiles into Ukrainian cities, causing widespread devastation.
This urgent request was a significant topic during a recent meeting between President Biden and Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain. Prime Minister Starmer has been actively encouraging the United States to provide more leeway for Ukraine in its military operations. Specifically, he is seeking President Biden’s endorsement for Ukraine to utilize British Storm Shadow missiles, which would enable strikes further into Russian territory.
Following their discussions, neither leader announced any immediate policy changes. As he departed from the White House, Prime Minister Starmer informed reporters, “We had a wide-ranging discussion about strategy.” A summary provided by the White House emphasized that both nations have “reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine” in its ongoing conflict.
Historically, President Biden has expressed reluctance to endorse deep strikes due to concerns about escalating tensions with Russia. However, in May, he did permit Ukraine to launch a series of U.S.-supplied weapons just beyond its borders, targeting Russian military bases responsible for attacks into Ukraine. This permission was later expanded, reflecting a shift in the administration’s stance.
Currently, Ukraine is not only requesting long-range weaponry but is also seeking authorization to deploy its existing arsenal to strike deeper into Russian territory. In response to these developments, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia issued a warning on Thursday, stating that if the United States and its allies grant Ukraine such capabilities, it would effectively put Russia “at war” with NATO.
Focus on Advanced Weaponry
The ongoing debate within the U.S. administration largely revolves around the provision of these advanced weapons.
Storm Shadows and SCALPs
Britain and France have already delivered air-launched cruise missiles to Ukraine, which have successfully targeted Russian sites in Crimea and the Black Sea region. These missiles boast a range of approximately 155 miles and have been deployed from Ukraine’s aging fleet of Soviet-era and Russian-designed fighter jets.
