A Disturbing Reality in Gaza

Early this summer, Amin Abed, a courageous Palestinian activist known for his outspoken criticism of Hamas, faced a chilling threat when he discovered bullets left on his doorstep in northern Gaza—an ominous warning that he could not ignore. In July, his fears materialized when he was violently attacked by Hamas security operatives. They covered his head, forcibly dragged him away, and subjected him to brutal beatings with hammers and metal bars.

“At any moment, I can be killed by the Israeli occupation,” Mr. Abed lamented during a phone interview from his hospital bed, “but I can face the same fate at the hands of those who’ve been ruling us for 17 years.” His words reflect the grim reality many Palestinians face under Hamas’s rule. “They almost killed me—those killers and criminals,” he added, underscoring the personal threat he feels from both sides of the conflict.

Currently hospitalized due to the severity of his injuries, Mr. Abed was fortunate enough to be rescued by bystanders who witnessed the violent attack. However, his experience is not an isolated incident; many others in Gaza share similar fates in a climate of fear and repression.

The recent recovery of the bodies of six Israeli hostages last month served as a haunting reminder of Hamas’s brutality. Each victim was shot in the head, and some bore additional bullet wounds, indicating they may have been shot while attempting to flee, according to Israeli officials who examined the autopsy findings.

Yet, Hamas’s violence extends beyond its conflict with Israel; it also employs brutality to maintain its control over the people of Gaza. The repercussions of this oppressive regime include:
