Israeli Commando Raid Targets Hezbollah Missile Facility in Syria
On Sunday, Israel executed a highly strategic commando operation in Syria, successfully dismantling a Hezbollah missile production facility located near the Lebanese border. This audacious raid resulted in the deaths of several individuals at the site, as reported by American and other Western officials.
The operation involved a remarkable maneuver by Israeli special forces, who descended from helicopters and reportedly seized critical materials from the missile facility. Due to the complexity of the mission, ground forces were deployed to ensure the recovery of vital intelligence from this clandestine weapons site. Fortunately, Israeli authorities confirmed that there were no casualties among their forces.
According to the officials, the operation also included targeted airstrikes on the extensive grounds of the Scientific Studies and Research Center, situated in the northwestern region of Syria, near Masyaf. This site has been identified as a key location for weapons development.
Syria’s state news agency, SANA, reported on the aftermath on Monday, indicating that the airstrikes resulted in at least 18 fatalities, with many others suffering injuries. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group based in the UK that closely follows the Syrian conflict, confirmed that the strikes specifically targeted an area housing a scientific research institute dedicated to the development of short- and medium-range precision missiles.
While Israel has refrained from publicly commenting on the operation, it is notable that prior to the strikes, Israeli officials informed senior American counterparts. On the same day, General Michael E. Kurilla, the head of U.S. Central Command, visited the underground war room of the Israel Defense Forces’ Northern Command. During this visit, he was briefed on the military’s operational plans concerning Lebanon, as noted by the Israel Defense Forces.
Independent analysts, along with Israeli and U.S. officials, have characterized the institute in Syria as a hub for weapons research and development, significantly supported by Iran, a key ally of the Syrian government. This facility is believed to engage in the development of various types of weapons, including chemical, biological, and potentially nuclear arms, alongside missiles utilized by Hezbollah, the formidable Iran-backed militia operating in Lebanon and actively engaged in hostilities against Israel.
