Trans Women in South Jakarta Prepare for a Historic Meeting

The vibrant group of trans women in South Jakarta put on their Sunday best, embracing the occasion with a flair that was as colorful as their personalities. Adorned in feathers, flowing silk, and shimmering glitter, they accentuated their look with dramatic long eyelashes. Each of them proudly draped a rosary around their necks, symbolizing their deep faith and anticipation.

“Pope Francis deserves our finest attire,” proclaimed Elvi Gondhoadjmodjo, as the group readied themselves to catch a glimpse of the Pope during his visit to Indonesia on Thursday. For many trans women navigating the challenges of societal marginalization, the Catholic Church has emerged as a refuge, offering a sense of belonging and acceptance. Pope Francis, with his progressive messages advocating for tolerance and inclusivity towards the L.G.B.T.Q. community, has become an inspirational figure and a personal hero for many.

“When we got Francis as the Pope, it felt like God was finally listening to us,” expressed Mami Yuli, the passionate leader of the community and a devoted Catholic. With a rosary tattooed on her chest, Mami Yuli embodies the intersection of her faith and identity. “This isn’t just a papal visit; it’s as if God himself is coming to see us.”

Excitement buzzed in the air as the group prepared for the day’s events. At the shelter where they reside, ten trans women squeezed into two rental cars, their hearts racing with anticipation as they drove toward the Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, the site of the Pope’s Mass later that day. While they didn’t have tickets to enter, their hope was to at least catch a glimpse of the Pope as he arrived, cherishing the momentous occasion that symbolized hope and recognition for their community.
