Tragic Death of Turkish-American Activist in West Bank
A Turkish-American activist tragically lost her life when she was shot by the Israeli Defense Forces during a protest in the West Bank. Azsenur Ezgi Eygi, who held dual citizenship in the United States and Turkey and resided in Seattle, was laid to rest on Saturday in her hometown of Didim, Turkey.
Eygi was fatally shot by Israeli forces last week while participating in a demonstration against the expansion of Israeli settlements. Eygi was reportedly not posing any threat to the armed forces at the time of the incident, according to Jonathan Polland, a fellow protester and an Israeli national. Polland noted that the shooting occurred during a moment of calm, following earlier clashes between demonstrators and military personnel.
The Israeli military has stated that Eygi was likely shot “indirectly and unintentionally.” In response to her death, the Turkish government announced its intention to carry out an independent investigation. Numan Kurtulus, the speaker of Turkey’s parliament, addressed mourners, declaring, “We are not going to leave our daughter’s blood on the ground, and we demand responsibility and accountability for this murder.”
Thousands of grieving individuals came together to pay their respects, with the streets adorned with Turkish flags in a poignant display of solidarity. Eygi’s death sparked widespread condemnation, including a statement from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, as the United States, alongside Egypt and Qatar, continues to urge for a cease-fire and the release of hostages still held by Hamas.

In a related development, during a meeting with the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his outrage over the ongoing conflict. He remarked, “What transpired in Bosnia during the 1990s is now being mirrored in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories,” highlighting the dire humanitarian situation in the region.
