Ashley Enoh was at home when she received a chilling text from her brother, a senior at Apalachee High School, saying, “Just so you know, I love you.” When she inquired further in the family group chat, he revealed the harrowing news of an active shooter on campus. Enoh’s younger sister, a junior at the school, confirmed that the school was on lockdown due to the threat.

Details from the authorities were sparse in the immediate aftermath, with officers dispatched shortly before 10:30 a.m. to respond to an “active shooting” situation, as stated by the sheriff’s office. Helicopter footage from WSB-TV captured the scene, showing numerous law enforcement and emergency vehicles surrounding the school in Barrow County, which is situated about 80 kilometers northeast of Atlanta.

Erin Clark, a 42-year-old mother, received a text from her son Ethan, a senior at the school, alerting her to the active shooter situation. In a panic, she left her job at an Amazon warehouse and rushed to the school, exchanging “I love you” texts with her son as she drove. Upon arriving, she found the main road blocked and had to park some distance away, joining other anxious parents as they rushed toward the school. Eventually, they were directed to the football field, where Clark was relieved to find Ethan sitting on the bleachers.

Clark shared that her son had been working on an essay when the gunfire erupted. Demonstrating remarkable courage, Ethan and his classmates quickly took action by barricading the classroom door and finding a place to hide. “I’m so proud of him for doing that,” Clark said, her voice filled with emotion. “He was so brave.”
