Tragic Missile Strike on Ukrainian Military Academy

The recent attack by Russian missiles on a Ukrainian military academy in Poltava has resulted in devastating consequences, as revealed by the academy’s director, Ihor Matsiuk. On Tuesday, the missiles struck during a time when cadets were engaged in their lessons, leaving them with only a mere two minutes to seek refuge in a bomb shelter.

Mr. Matsiuk explained that the timing of the strike coincided with most cadets being in classrooms, which unfortunately meant that those situated farther from the shelter faced greater risks. Many students in closer proximity to the shelter managed to survive, while those farther away suffered a tragic toll of dead and wounded.

He noted that two out of the six emergency exits were blocked due to debris from the explosions, and some interior corridors that cadets might have used for escape had collapsed. “When the air alarm sounded, everyone started running towards the shelter,” recounted Andriy, a cadet who spoke to reporters from his hospital bed while visiting injured friends. He expressed his relief at reaching the shelter just moments before the attack, describing it as “a terrible roar” that shook the ground beneath him. With a heavy heart, he added, “I managed to get into the shelter, unlike others.”

In a remarkable response to the emergency, the academy successfully evacuated over 1,000 individuals within just seven minutes of the alarm sounding, demonstrating the resilience and urgency of the staff and cadets amidst chaos.

On Wednesday, many residents of Poltava lined up at local clinics to donate blood in the aftermath of the attack, showcasing a strong sense of community solidarity and support for those affected by this tragic event.
