Tragic Death of Ugandan Olympic Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei
Rebecca Cheptegei, a talented Ugandan Olympic athlete, has tragically passed away at a hospital in Kenya following a horrific attack by her partner that left 80% of her body severely burned. According to a spokesperson from the hospital, Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries early in the morning after her vital organs failed. Upon her admission to the medical facility in Eldoret city, she was placed under heavy sedation to manage her condition.
Just weeks before this tragic incident, Cheptegei had participated in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she finished in an unfortunate 44th place. Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, expressed his profound grief and his desire for justice for his beloved daughter, whom he described as “very supportive” and full of potential.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom reported that Cheptegei’s partner, Dickson Ndiema, had deliberately purchased a can of gasoline, doused her with it, and then set her ablaze on Sunday. This shocking act has left the community in disbelief and mourning.
The Uganda Athletics Federation shared their deep sorrow regarding Cheptegei’s passing, highlighting that she was a victim of domestic violence. They emphasized the need for awareness and action against such atrocities.
In response to the incident, Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare condemned the attack as “a cowardly and senseless act” that has led to the loss of a remarkable athlete. The sports community and her supporters now echo calls for justice and better protection for individuals facing domestic violence.
