Tony Blair’s Insights on Leadership

Tony Blair has recently released a new book titled “On Leadership,” which serves as a comprehensive guide filled with insights he wishes he had received when he first stepped into 10 Downing Street in 1997. Given the current political landscape, one can’t help but perceive this work as a potential manual for Keir Starmer, the first Labour leader to achieve a general election victory since Blair himself.

Despite the intriguing timing, Mr. Blair insists that the book is “absolutely not” aimed at Starmer, whom he claims he is “really not” advising. However, it’s worth noting that the two leaders shared the stage last year, as Starmer prepared for his campaign.

In this pivotal year of global elections, Mr. Blair extends his lessons to any emerging leader willing to listen—offering valuable perspectives on geopolitical turmoil, the rise of populism, and strategies for navigating an increasingly unpredictable United States.

Reflecting on the current state of American politics, Mr. Blair remarked, “I think you’d have to say American politics in some ways has become bitterly divided and at a certain level, dysfunctional.” He added, “But it’s happened at the same time as America itself has re-emerged as, in my view, easily the strongest country in the world.”

Now at 71, Mr. Blair comes across as affable and expansive, though occasionally defensive when discussing his legacy. He proudly highlights the accomplishments of his government, particularly in the realms of education reform and the enhancement of Britain’s public health service. However, his post-government career has attracted its share of criticism. His engagements with autocrats and billionaires have raised eyebrows, prompting some to question his motives.

In defense of his choices, he emphasized the necessity of engaging with influential figures, citing his interactions with Saudi Arabia as a means to foster dialogue. Additionally, he expressed optimism about the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in governance, although he became somewhat reticent when the topic shifted to Elon Musk, a figure he otherwise admires.
