The Rise of Homemade Firearms: A Closer Look at 3D-Printed Guns

Homemade weapons have existed for centuries, evolving in tandem with technological advancements. However, the advent of 3D-printed firearms about a decade ago has dramatically transformed the landscape of gun acquisition and distribution on a global scale. My colleague and I delved into the emergence of one particular firearm, the FGC-9, which law enforcement officials have identified as the most prevalent 3D-printed gun worldwide. Yet, this weapon is merely one example within the broader phenomenon of 3D-printed firearms.

How Difficult Is It to Fabricate a Gun?

While the process is becoming increasingly accessible, it still demands a considerable amount of technical expertise. Those who are not familiar with firearms or 3D printing may envision a futuristic machine that can produce a complete gun with just the push of a button. The reality, however, is quite different.

Three-dimensional printing has simplified the task for the average individual, allowing them to quickly and relatively cheaply create a gun’s receiver or various components. The receiver serves as the foundational frame of the firearm. In contrast, other crucial parts such as the bolt, recoil spring, and barrel are typically made of metal, which presents a greater challenge to manufacture using a 3D printer. Fortunately, some online retailers offer these metal components for sale, enabling individuals to purchase bolts and barrels while printing the remaining parts—effectively turning the assembly of a firearm into a lethal version of a Lego set.
