As Apple’s launch event on September 9 approaches, it can be anticipated that many tech enthusiasts are planning to switch to new iPhones. A recent study conducted by market research firm CIRP thoroughly examines the reasons users are considering upgrading to the iPhone 16.

According to the results of this research, participants were asked why they were considering switching to a new iPhone within the year leading up to June 2024. 44% of participants indicated that their current phones were “old”. This response is particularly common among owners of the iPhone 8 series and the first generation iPhone SE. Therefore, it is expected that a significant portion of users planning to purchase the iPhone 16 will be transitioning from these older models rather than newer ones.

Similarly, 29% of survey respondents mentioned situations such as their current phones being lost, broken, or stolen as reasons for getting a new phone. In this case, a total of 73% of iPhone users made the decision to upgrade due to negative experiences rather than seeking new and attractive features. Only 18% of respondents stated that they were considering upgrading their iPhones to obtain “new features”. This percentage remains quite low.

The iPhone 16 is expected to offer many innovative features supported by artificial intelligence, such as an Action button, a Capture button, and Apple Intelligence. However, this does not appear to be a very positive sign for Apple in terms of increasing the number of users transitioning to the new model. Of course, these percentages may change after the official launch of the phone, and an increase in the number of users transitioning to newer iPhone models may be observed.

Another significant trend observed is that due to the slowdown in advancements in smartphone hardware, users tend to keep their phones for longer periods. Additionally, the ability of iPhones to retain their value and attractive trade-in options that catch users’ attention help Apple retain its current user base. Experts believe that the iPhone 16 also has the potential to attract many Android users to the Apple ecosystem.
