Shortly after this poignant display, Hamas released a video featuring one of the captives, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, aged 23, which was recorded at an unspecified time prior to his death. The release of these videos seems to be a deliberate strategy by Hamas, aiming to exacerbate divisions within Israeli society and ramp up pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a heartfelt statement following the release of the video, Mr. Goldberg-Polin’s parents, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, expressed their anguish, saying, “This must serve as an immediate wake-up call to the world to take action today.” However, the timing of the footage’s recording remains unclear.

Despite the mounting public pressure, Prime Minister Netanyahu has firmly asserted that he will not concede to terms that he believes would permit Hamas to regain strength in Gaza. This stance has been met with increasing protests across Israel, which have persisted daily since Sunday, when the military announced the recovery of Mr. Goldberg-Polin’s body alongside five other hostages. The Israeli Ministry of Health later reported that autopsy findings indicated all six individuals had been shot at close range just prior to the discovery of their bodies.

The parents of Mr. Goldberg-Polin, who hold dual Israeli and American citizenship, have emerged as vocal advocates for a ceasefire, passionately calling for an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Their advocacy reached a wider audience when they spoke out at the Democratic National Convention in August, emphasizing the urgent need for action. Previously, their son had also featured in a video released by Hamas in April. In a poignant conclusion to their statement on Thursday, the couple lamented, “No other family should go through what our family (and the families of the other recently executed hostages) have endured.”
