Polygon Labs Unveils Advanced Zero-Knowledge Cryptography Chips

Polygon Labs, a leading developer within the Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem, announced on Tuesday the launch of a revolutionary computer chip designed specifically for zero-knowledge cryptography processing. This innovative chip, developed in collaboration with hardware manufacturer Fabric, is tailored for Polygon’s cutting-edge interoperability solution known as AggLayer.

This announcement follows Fabric’s recent success in securing $33 million in a Series A funding round, an event in which Polygon Labs was an active participant. The funding is aimed at the creation of “verifiable processing units” (VPUs), which are custom chips optimized for cryptographic operations and blockchain technology.

The zero-knowledge (ZK) team at Polygon has been in close partnership with Fabric to develop these VPUs, which will enhance their prover libraries, Plonky2 and Plonky3. Provers play a crucial role in blockchain systems that utilize zero-knowledge cryptography, a design feature that gained significant traction within the crypto industry last year, marking a primary focus area for Polygon.

The AggLayer project, a flagship initiative by Polygon, aims to facilitate seamless token transfers across affiliated blockchain networks. In their press release, Polygon stated, “As the latest contributor to AggLayer, Fabric will collaborate closely with Polygon Labs to expedite the AggLayer roadmap by developing software that enables Plonky2 and Plonky3 to operate efficiently on the VPU. In turn, Polygon Labs will partner with Fabric to ensure that future iterations of the VPU will support the long-term objectives of the AggLayer.”

Additionally, Polygon Labs announced plans to invest $5 million in VPU-based server systems to enhance the speed of zero-knowledge proof generation projects associated with the AggLayer. Polygon co-founder Mihailo Bjelic expressed enthusiasm about this technology, stating in the press release shared with CoinDesk, “Fabric’s VPUs can dramatically shorten the timeline for the widespread adoption of zero-knowledge technology from three to five years down to just six to twelve months. For Polygon Labs, the implementation of this technology will significantly expedite the development of the AggLayer, resulting in real-time, cost-effective proofs that were previously believed to be years away, along with much lower proving costs than initially anticipated in the medium term.”
