Sentencing of Peter Nygard: A Reflection on Trauma

The recent hearing aimed to determine the prison sentence for Peter Nygard, the former Canadian fashion mogul convicted of rape. For one woman who had suffered sexual assault at the hands of Mr. Nygard, the experience had long felt like a life sentence of its own.

During Mr. Nygard’s two-day sentencing hearing, which began in July and resumed on a recent Monday, the woman recounted the profound impact of the trauma she endured in the late 1980s when she was just 21 years old. The assault irrevocably altered the course of her life, shattering her aspirations as a clothing designer and television presenter. She described how the incident led to debilitating health issues and left her with deep psychological scars.

“I continue to live under a veil of sadness,” the woman expressed, her identity safeguarded by a publication ban. “It breaks my heart to reflect upon how the trajectory of my entire life was derailed.”

After hearing poignant statements from the victims, along with arguments presented by Mr. Nygard’s defense team, the judge ultimately delivered a sentence of 11 years in prison for Mr. Nygard. This sentence was specifically for the sexual assault of four women, one of whom was a minor at the time of the attack. Given the time he has already spent in custody since his arrest, Mr. Nygard is expected to serve approximately seven more years in prison and will be eligible for parole in about two years.

“Peter Nygard is a sexual predator,” declared Justice Robert Goldstein of the Superior Court of Ontario, as he pronounced the sentence before a packed courtroom. “He is also a Canadian success story that has taken a dark turn.”
