Israeli Military Withdrawal from Jenin

On Friday, reports emerged from Palestinian news outlets and local residents indicating that Israeli military forces had begun to withdraw from the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank. This development comes after a significant 10-day incursion that resulted in the deaths of dozens of individuals, including children, and left behind widespread destruction.

As Israeli troops pulled back, Palestinian civil defense teams, along with public works employees and volunteers, mobilized to assess the extensive damage inflicted on homes, businesses, roads, and water lines. Efforts to restore essential services commenced, as detailed by Wafa, the official news agency of the Palestinian Authority.

Violence Continues in the West Bank

In a troubling turn of events elsewhere in the West Bank, an American woman participating in a protest against an Israeli settler outpost was tragically shot and killed. In a separate incident, a 13-year-old Palestinian girl, who was merely observing a clash between Israeli and Palestinian forces, also lost her life. Witnesses present during these incidents attributed both shootings to Israeli troops. The Israeli military, however, stated that it was launching an investigation into the occurrences.

Ongoing Uncertainty

As of Friday, it remained uncertain whether all Israeli soldiers had completely vacated Jenin or if they might return. Historically, during extensive military operations in the West Bank, Israeli forces have frequently withdrawn from Palestinian cities and towns, only to return later.

Inspecting the Damage

As part of the recovery efforts, local teams inspected a damaged home in Jenin on Friday. The devastation was evident, with many areas requiring significant rebuilding and restoration.

In a statement released on Friday, the Israeli military refrained from commenting on the withdrawal. Instead, they asserted that their forces “are continuing to act in order to achieve the objectives of the counterterrorism operation.” This operation reflects a marked escalation in military activity, following a period of nearly nightly raids aimed at dismantling Palestinian armed groups and addressing the increasing incidents of violence directed at Israelis.
