As the war rages on in Gaza, the situation in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has also deteriorated, marked by an alarming increase in violent encounters. Palestinian attackers are executing bolder and more sophisticated operations, coinciding with the Israeli military’s intensification of its raids in Palestinian urban areas.

A significant incident occurred on Sunday when a Jordanian citizen opened fire, killing three Israelis at a heavily fortified border crossing in the West Bank. This attack followed a series of recent attempts by Palestinian militants, including factions from Hamas, to employ car bombs within the territory. Notably, last month saw Hamas and its ally, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, claiming responsibility for an attempted suicide bombing in Tel Aviv, with Israeli police confirming the assailant originated from the West Bank. Just under two weeks later, a drive-by shooting resulted in the deaths of three Israeli police officers in the southern West Bank.

When viewed collectively, these violent episodes represent the most intricate series of attacks related to the volatile conditions in the West Bank in years, according to various analysts. While the border crossing attack on Sunday was deemed the act of a lone individual whose motives remain unclear, the subsequent incidents indicate that militant groups have cultivated new technical, logistical, and organizational capabilities despite extensive Israeli efforts to suppress their insurgency.

“When you compare the recent events to the patterns observed over the last decade, there is a clear shift towards a more coordinated and organized approach to carrying out attacks,” asserted Ibrahim Dalalsha, the director of the Horizon Center, a research organization based in Ramallah, located in the West Bank.
