Cholera Outbreaks on the Rise: A Global Health Crisis

The cholera outbreaks that are currently sweeping across the globe are becoming increasingly lethal. According to a recent analysis by the World Health Organization (W.H.O.), deaths attributed to this diarrheal disease surged significantly last year, far exceeding the rise in reported cases.

Cholera is a disease that is both preventable and treatable at a minimal cost, yet extensive outbreaks have overwhelmed even the most prepared health systems in nations that have not faced this challenge in years. In 2023, the global report indicated that the number of cholera-related deaths increased by a staggering 71 percent compared to the previous year, while reported cases rose by only 13 percent. This alarming trend has largely been fueled by factors such as armed conflict and the escalating impacts of climate change, as highlighted in the W.H.O. report.

“It is utterly unacceptable for death rates to be climbing at a pace so much faster than the increase in cases,” stated Philippe Barboza, who heads the cholera team within the health emergencies program at the W.H.O. “This situation reflects a troubling global indifference toward a disease that has afflicted humanity for thousands of years, predominantly impacting the poorest populations who lack access to clean drinking water,” he added.

In 2023, more than 4,000 cholera-related deaths were officially reported; however, Dr. Barboza indicated that the actual number is likely to be significantly higher. The W.H.O. has been working to model the true number of cholera deaths using data obtained from various testing programs, suggesting that the total death toll for 2023 could exceed 100,000.

Cholera can lead to death due to dehydration in as little as a single day, as the body attempts to expel the virulent bacteria through severe vomiting and profuse watery diarrhea. “How can we accept that in 2024, individuals are dying merely because they lack access to a simple packet of oral rehydration salts, which costs about 50 cents?” Dr. Barboza questioned. “It is not a matter of needing advanced intensive care; all they require are IV fluids and antibiotics.”
