Challenges Faced by the Netherlands’ Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team
Victories against the Netherlands’ women’s wheelchair basketball team are a rarity, leading their Paralympic adversaries to often settle for moral victories instead. In a thrilling quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Spain, an emerging competitor among Europe’s elite, managed to keep the Dutch Angels to a mere 3-point advantage at halftime. However, they ultimately succumbed to a powerful third-quarter surge, resulting in a 61-43 defeat. Franck Belen, the head coach of Spain, remarked, “We competed for 32 minutes and we were close. It was something special for us because they are the big team and we were the little team.”
Similarly, after suffering a 69-56 loss during pool play on Saturday, Ixhelt González of the United States expressed, “They’re bigger than us, faster than us, but we can definitely hang with them.” This sentiment echoes the challenges many teams face when going up against the formidable Dutch squad.
Germany, known for its physical style of play, engaged in a fierce contest against the leading Dutch scorer, Mariska Beijer, enduring a grueling match that showcased their resilience. Despite the loss, Mareike Miller, a German athlete who clinched gold at the 2012 London Games, shared, “We fought. I think we did OK, and now we want to move forward and beat some of the other teams.”
The Dutch team entered the Paris Paralympics as a formidable force, boasting a remarkable record as a para sports dynasty. Since 2017, they have claimed victory in seven consecutive international tournaments, which includes:

In their initial four games of the Paralympics, they achieved an impressive average victory margin of 24 points. However, this statistic was significantly influenced by an overwhelming 53-point win against Japan, during which a Japanese guard was unceremoniously knocked from her chair by a hard screen and was subsequently carried off on a stretcher.
