Apple’s iPhone SE 4 Marks the Beginning of the OLED Screen Era

While all eyes are on the iPhone 16 series, many details and leaks about Apple’s next SE model, the iPhone SE 4, continue to emerge. Recently, it was claimed that this new model would be equipped with an OLED screen supplied by LG Display.

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Apple plans to completely end the use of LCD screens in the iPhone series with the iPhone SE 4. This means that it will be terminating its partnership with Japan-based screen suppliers Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp. After introducing OLED screens with the iPhone X in 2017, Apple gradually started replacing LCD screens with OLED panels in its premium phones.

About a decade ago, Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp accounted for 70% of the total production of iPhone screens. However, this percentage rapidly decreased as Apple transitioned to OLED panels. Now, with rumors that the iPhone SE 4 model will also be equipped with an OLED screen, it is anticipated that Apple will end its collaboration with these two Japanese screen suppliers.

According to obtained information, Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp, which do not produce OLED screens for smartphones, will continue to supply LCD screens for the iPhone SE 3; however, they are expected to exit Apple’s supply chain when moving to the iPhone SE 4. Additionally, it has been reported that Apple has started ordering OLED screens from Chinese BOE Technology Group and LG Display for the iPhone SE 4, which is expected to be released in 2025.

The iPhone SE 4 is thought to have a design similar to the iPhone 14, and therefore, it is expected to use the same screen as the iPhone 13 and 14. Another recent claim suggests that the iPhone SE 4 is expected to have Apple Intelligence features, making it reportedly more powerful than the iPhone 15.

The expected technical specifications of the iPhone SE 4 include:

  • Single camera system
  • 6.1-inch OLED screen
  • Face ID feature
  • USB-C connection port
  • 7000 series aluminum case with glass on the front and back
