American Woman Shot in West Bank During Protest

An American woman has been tragically shot by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) in the West Bank after participating in a protest against settlement expansion. Local media reports identify her as Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, an American citizen of Turkish descent. The incident occurred in the town of Beita, situated south of Nablus, where tensions have escalated due to ongoing conflicts over land and settlements.

According to the government-run Palestine News Agency, Eygi was injured during the protests, which turned violent as demonstrators clashed with IDF troops. An 18-year-old Palestinian was also reported injured in the same protest. In response to the turmoil, the IDF stated on X (formerly Twitter) that their forces “responded with fire toward a main instigator of violent activity who hurled rocks at the forces and posed a threat to them.” The IDF has indicated that they are investigating reports regarding the involvement of a foreign national in the incident.

Eygi was subsequently transferred to the Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, where she was placed in intensive care. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries, as reported by the Wafa News Agency, which cited medical sources. Eygi had been actively involved in campaigns aimed at protecting Palestinian farmers from Israeli military actions, highlighting her commitment to social justice in the region.

Turkish media outlets confirmed that Aysenur Ezgi Eygi was born in Antalya, Turkey, and held American citizenship. This incident occurs against the backdrop of heightened military operations in the West Bank. Recently, the IDF completed a significant withdrawal from the city of Jenin after one of their largest operations in the area since the onset of the war between Israel and Hamas in October 2023. This nine-day military campaign reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 36 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, and caused extensive damage throughout Jenin.

IDF officials have justified the operation, which began on August 28, as necessary to mitigate recent attacks targeting Israeli civilians in the region. The ongoing cycle of violence and the loss of life continue to raise concerns about the humanitarian situation and the quest for peace in the area.
