Interesting Developments in Windows Market Share: August 2024 Report

With the beginning of a new month, Statcounter’s monthly reports have surfaced once again. Looking at the performance of operating systems in August 2024, notable changes are observed on the Windows side. It’s not accurate to say that Windows 11 is a perfect operating system; however, despite its issues, its market share continues to rise rapidly.

According to Statcounter’s August 2024 report, Windows 11 is currently progressing towards a 32% market share. Current data shows that Windows 11 has recorded significant growth in the desktop market. As of August 2024, Windows 11 reached a level of 31.63%, up by 0.8 points from the previous month. On an annual basis, its share has increased from 23.17% to 31.63%, marking a rise of 8.46 points this month.

While this growth means that it has only half the market share of its predecessor, Windows 10, it is still a quite remarkable development. In August 2024, Windows 10 lost 0.85 points, dropping to a 64.14% market share, experiencing a 7.8% decrease on an annual basis. No significant changes were observed in other unsupported Windows versions. Windows 7 remains at 3.05%, Windows 8.1 at 0.41%, and Windows XP, which is still present in some systems, continues to exist at 0.4%.

Most Used Windows Versions in August 2024:

  • Windows 10 – 64.14% (-0.85 points)
  • Windows 11 – 31.63% (+0.80 points)
  • Windows 7 – 3.05% (+0.10 points)
  • Windows 8.1 – 0.41% (-0.01 points)
  • Windows XP – 0.4% (+0.02 points)

A change is expected; as support for Windows 10 is slated to end in October 2025. This situation may accelerate the adoption rate of Windows 11. However, considering that many Windows 10 users cannot upgrade to Windows 11 due to incompatible hardware, it may take a long time before Windows 11 can take the lead in the market.
