In a devastating incident on Tuesday, at least 12 individuals lost their lives when a boat carrying migrants capsized off the northern coast of France while attempting to navigate the perilous waters of the English Channel. This tragic event marks the deadliest maritime disaster in the region this year, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by French and British authorities to curtail dangerous crossings.
Gérald Darmanin, the interior minister of France, took to the social media platform X to announce that the tragic sinking occurred near Wimereux, a location within the Pas-de-Calais region where numerous similar tragedies have unfolded in recent months. According to Mr. Darmanin, two individuals remain unaccounted for, and several others sustained injuries in the incident.
“All government services are mobilized to find the missing and provide care for the victims,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
The French maritime authorities reported that dozens of people were thrown into the frigid waters after their vessel encountered unspecified difficulties early Tuesday morning near Cap Gris-Nez. In a coordinated rescue effort, rescue workers managed to retrieve 65 individuals from the water, some of whom were in critical condition, according to an official statement from the maritime authorities.
Rescue operations are ongoing, involving helicopters and multiple vessels, as teams continue to search for survivors and ensure the safety of those affected by this tragic event.
