Pope Francis is set to depart on Monday for an ambitious 11-day journey through Southeast Asia and Oceania, marking one of the longest and most complex trips of his papacy. At 87 years old, the pontiff has faced health challenges and has increasingly relied on a wheelchair, adding a layer of difficulty to this extensive travel. Nevertheless, this trip underscores his unwavering commitment to connecting with Catholics in distant regions.

The pope’s itinerary includes stops in four nations, encompassing a staggering total of approximately 20,000 miles traveled by air. He will first visit Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim majority, before continuing to Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Singapore. This journey represents a significant step in deepening his engagement with Asia, which he has identified as a priority for his papacy.

During this trip, Pope Francis will endure over 43 hours of air travel and engage in numerous meetings with local faithful, clergy, and political leaders in cities characterized by tropical climates and high pollution levels—far removed from the familiar surroundings of Rome. According to Massimo Faggioli, a theology professor at Villanova University, “It’s a physical test, and a sign that this pontificate is far from being over.”
