Polio Vaccination Campaign in Gaza: A Daunting Challenge

A mass polio vaccination campaign targeting young children is set to commence in the Gaza Strip this Sunday. This initiative faces significant hurdles due to the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of individuals, widespread destruction of buildings and essential infrastructure, and perilous conditions for both aid workers and civilians attempting to navigate the area.

The success of this inoculation campaign hinges on the ability to secure brief pauses in hostilities. It necessitates intricate coordination among various parties, including Israeli authorities, humanitarian organizations, aid workers, and the health ministry in Gaza, which operates under Hamas.

Both Israel and Hamas have pledged to observe staggered pauses in the fighting to facilitate the vaccination of children. The Israeli government has also stated that it will refrain from issuing evacuation orders in regions where vaccinations are taking place. However, after nearly a year of relentless conflict in the enclave, there are legitimate concerns that this agreement may not be sustained long enough to complete the two essential rounds of vaccinations deemed necessary by health officials to curb the potential spread of the disease both within Gaza and beyond its borders.

“We appreciate the commitment to humanitarian pauses in specific regions and the suspension of evacuation orders to allow the campaign to proceed,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, expressed in a social media post on Thursday. “However, it is crucial to understand that the only enduring remedy is peace. To truly safeguard the children of Gaza, a comprehensive cease-fire is imperative.”

Understanding Polio and Vaccination Methods

So, why is there a resurgence of polio in Gaza? The disease can be effectively combated using two primary types of vaccines:

• Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV): This vaccine is administered via injection and utilizes a killed version of the virus.
• Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV): This vaccine is given orally and contains a severely weakened live strain of the virus.

Both forms of vaccination are crucial in the battle against polio, a disease that can lead to severe disability and even death. The urgency of vaccinating children in Gaza cannot be overstated, especially in the face of ongoing conflict and instability.
