Placards in the train station starkly declared its mission: “Evacuation.” As families embraced tightly and exchanged tearful farewells, they ushered children and elderly relatives onto the coaches at the central train station in the eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk. Many stood with hands pressed against the windows, waving goodbye as the train began to pull away.

With the Russian army advancing ominously and rapidly, Pokrovsk has become a town confronting harsh realities. Police vehicles roamed the streets, their loudspeakers broadcasting urgent messages urging residents to evacuate immediately. In a scene emblematic of the turmoil, municipal workers have been diligently transporting library books, elementary school desks, and even statues from parks and public squares, trying to preserve what they can.

By late afternoon, as a curfew settled over the town, the streets fell into an unsettling silence, save for the occasional military vehicles racing through, a reminder of the ongoing conflict. The situation in Pokrovsk contrasts sharply with the recent military developments; the Ukrainian military’s unexpected offensive into Russian territory last month marked one of Kyiv’s boldest strategies of the war, yielding significant territorial gains and capturing numerous prisoners. However, the wholesale evacuation of Pokrovsk highlights the inherent risks associated with such operations.

Among those leaving was Zoya Parosyuk, an 88-year-old woman, who received assistance from a dedicated volunteer evacuation team as she prepared to leave her lifelong home in Pokrovsk on Wednesday. Meanwhile, in the nearby industrial town of Myrnohrad, residents also faced the same fate, with friends and family rallying together to help loved ones escape the encroaching danger.
