Major Drug Production Sites Dismantled in Poland and Ukraine

Authorities in Poland and Ukraine have successfully dismantled several significant drug manufacturing facilities, resulting in the seizure of nearly 200 kilograms of crystal methadone, as reported by the European Union’s law enforcement agency, Europol. This operation marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle against synthetic drug production in the region.

In a statement released on Friday, Europol detailed that the joint operation led to the discovery and subsequent destruction of the largest synthetic opioid production laboratory ever identified in Poland, specifically dedicated to the production of crystal methadone. This laboratory posed a serious threat to public health and safety.

During this extensive operation, authorities executed 38 coordinated raids across both Poland and Ukraine, culminating in the arrest of seven individuals who are believed to be key members of a sophisticated criminal network involved in the production and distribution of synthetic drugs in these nations. The actions taken also resulted in the seizure of vast quantities of harmful substances and precursors that are essential for drug manufacturing.

Among the substantial findings during the raids, law enforcement officials uncovered 195 kilograms of crystal methadone, a powerful synthetic opioid notorious for its potency. Additionally, over 430 liters of reaction mixtures—chemical solutions in various stages of drug production—were confiscated, alongside large amounts of drug precursors critical for synthesizing opioids and cathinones.

This criminal network was found to be illegally producing methadone in a highly concentrated crystalline form, which poses severe risks of overdose and potential fatalities among users.

Europol emphasized the vital importance of cross-border cooperation in combating such threats, asserting that it is “crucial for safeguarding our societies and protecting the lives and health of citizens from the dangers posed by international organized drug crime.” In 2023, Europol issued an Early Warning Notification to its member states and partners, highlighting an alarming increase in the trafficking of these dangerous types of drugs.
