Brazil Bans Elon Musk’s X Amid Disinformation Concerns

A Brazilian judge has officially prohibited the use of Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, within the nation, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation over the platform’s role in disseminating misinformation. This ruling comes after a prolonged period of scrutiny and legal battles pertaining to allegations that X has become a breeding ground for false information.

Reports indicate that X failed to comply with an order to eliminate certain accounts associated with disinformation efforts. As a result, on Friday, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes mandated that internet service providers must block access to X in Brazil, a country with a population of approximately 215 million people. This decision was highlighted in an article from the New York Times.

Local news outlets have reported that individuals attempting to bypass the ban using a VPN could face hefty fines, potentially reaching 50,000 reais (around $8,900), as stated by the BBC.

This ruling significantly impacts cryptocurrency enthusiasts in Brazil, as X has long served as a pivotal platform for discussion and engagement within the crypto community. Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of X (formerly known as Twitter), has expressed support for alternative platforms like Nostr and Bluesky, although he has distanced himself from the latter in recent times.

In light of the Brazilian government’s decision, one of the developers behind Bluesky took to that platform to comment, stating: “We’ve never seen traffic like this.”
