Keir Starmer’s Diplomatic Mission to France
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer embarked on a significant diplomatic journey to Paris on Thursday, meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. This visit aims to rejuvenate and strengthen the historically important relationship between the UK and France. Reports indicate that Starmer’s itinerary included a breakfast meeting with prominent French business leaders, followed by a crucial summit at the Elysee Palace.
Starmer’s trip to Paris comes on the heels of his recent visit to Germany, where he unveiled ambitious plans to draft a treaty aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two nations. This proposed treaty focuses on vital areas such as defence, energy security, science, and technology. Notably, the initiative is inspired by London’s recent agreements with France, which emphasize defence, security, and closer law enforcement cooperation, particularly in combating the challenges posed by people-smuggling gangs.
During his discussions, the UK Prime Minister highlighted that both nations intend to develop a joint action plan to address the pressing issue of illegal migration. His government continues to face significant pressure to curb the number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, a situation that has become increasingly contentious.
In a show of unity, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and UK Prime Minister Starmer exchanged warm handshakes following a press conference in Berlin, signaling a mutual commitment to enhance bilateral relations.
Since taking office in early July after his Labour Party’s decisive victory in the general election, Starmer has expressed a clear desire to mend the frayed ties with European nations that have been strained in recent years due to Brexit-related disputes. “I am absolutely clear that we do want a reset with Europe, a reset with the EU,” Starmer remarked during his visit to Berlin.

However, it is important to note that Starmer has firmly stated that the pursuit of closer ties with Europe does not entail a reversal of Brexit. Additionally, he clarified that the UK does not intend to participate in the EU’s youth mobility scheme, which would grant young individuals from the EU the opportunity to live and work in the UK and vice versa.
