Life Sentence for Daniel Sancho Bronchalo in Gruesome Murder Case
A court in Thailand has handed down a life sentence to Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, the son of renowned Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho, after he was found guilty of the murder and dismemberment of a Colombian surgeon. The verdict was delivered on Thursday, marking the conclusion of a high-profile trial that captured international attention due to both the notoriety of the Sancho family and the horrific details surrounding the crime.
The trial, which concluded in May, took place on Koh Samui, a picturesque island that is a favorite among tourists for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. The case drew significant media coverage, not only because of the involvement of a celebrity family but also due to the shocking nature of the crime, which starkly contrasts with the island’s reputation as a holiday paradise.
Prosecutors accused Mr. Sancho, aged 30, of murdering Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, a 44-year-old surgeon from northern Colombia, during a meeting that took place in August of the previous year. The two men had originally connected a year earlier through social media platform Instagram and had developed a romantic relationship. They met on the island of Koh Phangan, famous for its monthly full-moon celebrations where revellers dance the night away on the beach.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Mr. Sancho, a chef known for his culinary videos on YouTube, had purchased knives and a saw prior to his meeting with Mr. Arrieta. It was alleged that he then murdered Mr. Arrieta and subsequently dismembered his body. Prosecutors claimed that Mr. Sancho disposed of body parts in a landfill on the island and others in the surrounding sea. Following a night of partying at a full-moon event, he reported Mr. Arrieta as missing to local authorities.
Mr. Sancho, whose mother Sylvia Bronchalo is also an actress, took a plea of guilty for concealing the body, as stated in a release from the Koh Samui Provincial Court. Throughout the trial, he did not deny the disturbing acts of dismemberment and disposal of Mr. Arrieta’s remains, revealing the grim reality of his actions.
