A court in Thailand has delivered a significant verdict, finding Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, a member of a prominent Spanish acting lineage, guilty of premeditated murder. The ruling culminates a sensational case that involved the dismemberment of the victim, Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, a 44-year-old Colombian plastic surgeon.

The incident occurred while both men were vacationing on the idyllic Thai island of Koh Pha-ngan in August of the previous year. Renowned for its vibrant “Full Moon” beach parties that attract revelers from across the globe, the island became the backdrop for this tragic event.

The case first came to public attention when waste collectors discovered what the Bangkok Post described as a dismembered pelvis and approximately 5 kilograms of intestines stuffed into a fertilizer sack at a local garbage dump. Shortly thereafter, Sancho reported Arrieta as missing, prompting police to gather evidence that eventually led to his arrest just a few days after the murder. Sancho subsequently confessed to his involvement in the horrific crime.

According to police accounts, Sancho confessed to the murder itself, indicating that the act was premeditated following threats from Arrieta to expose an alleged sexual relationship between the two men. However, Sancho, supported by his father and legal team, has vehemently denied these claims, labeling them as a misrepresentation of his statements to the authorities.

Evidence presented in court included surveillance footage that allegedly showed Sancho purchasing a knife, rubber gloves, garbage bags, and cleaning solutions at a convenience store just prior to Arrieta’s death. Throughout the trial, Sancho’s defense focused on disputing the notion of premeditation, suggesting instead that Arrieta’s death was accidental and that the only criminal acts committed were the concealment and dismemberment of his body. The prosecution, however, maintained from the outset that Sancho intentionally orchestrated a meeting with Arrieta to end his life.

Additionally, the court mandated that Sancho pay €119,000 to Arrieta’s family as compensation.
