Concerns Over Nuclear Safety Amid Ongoing Conflict

Miroslav Jenča, the Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas, expressed profound alarm regarding the alarming incidents surrounding nuclear facilities in both Ukraine and Russia during a recent Security Council meeting. He stated, “We are alarmed regarding reported incidents around nuclear facilities in Ukraine and Russia.”

In August, a series of troubling events raised significant concerns about nuclear safety. These included a drone strike occurring near the perimeter of a nuclear plant, a fire that severely damaged a cooling tower, and persistent military activity in proximity to the site. Jenča highlighted these events as sources of escalating worry. Additionally, he pointed out the increasing apprehension surrounding the safety of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in Russia, where drone debris has been discovered on the premises.

Robert A. Wood, the United Nations’ Alternate Representative of the United States for Special Political Affairs, did not hold back in his criticism of the Kremlin. He condemned the Russian authorities for compromising the safety of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Wood urged Russia to acknowledge the demands voiced by over a hundred members of the UN General Assembly, calling for the return of control of the plant to Ukrainian authorities. Related

Wood reaffirmed the unwavering support of the United States for Ukraine, emphasizing recent security agreements and the international backing provided through the Ukraine Compact with NATO allies.

In contrast, the Russian representative, Dmitry Polyanskiy, made a provocative statement, claiming, “Russian forces are clearing the last strongholds held by Ukrainian forces since 2014. This is just the beginning; Ukraine will have to pay for the Kursk adventure in full.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, shed light on the ongoing devastation inflicted upon Ukraine. He stated, “For over two years, Ukraine has been withstanding the largest aerial terror in human history,” detailing the extensive missile, drone, and bomb attacks perpetrated by Russia. Kyslytsya characterized Russia’s actions as emblematic of a “criminal regime” that exhibits a blatant disregard for human life or morality, both within its own borders and in its international dealings.
