When Vice President Kamala Harris proclaimed last week in Chicago, “you can always trust me to put country above party,” the statement resonated strongly in Britain, where the newly appointed Prime Minister Keir Starmer had employed a similar sentiment throughout the Labour Party’s unwavering pursuit of power earlier this summer. This moment highlights a fascinating intersection in political rhetoric between the two leaders.

However, the similarities between Mr. Starmer and Ms. Harris extend beyond just their phrases. Both figures have adapted their earlier stances, softening or recalibrating them in an effort to broaden their appeal within their respective parties. Additionally, they share backgrounds as former public prosecutors, both of whom emphasize a steadfast commitment to upholding the rule of law. In a climate marked by rising extremism, both leaders find themselves navigating a precarious political landscape, where law and order face significant challenges.

In Mr. Starmer’s case, his administration faced considerable challenges almost immediately after his electoral victory. He was confronted with anti-immigrant riots that erupted following a tragic knife attack on a children’s dance class. This incident was compounded by false narratives, propagated by far-right factions, falsely alleging that the assailant was a Muslim asylum seeker. Police later clarified that the attacker was born in Britain and that his parents were Rwandan Christians. On the other hand, analysts suggest that Ms. Harris may encounter civil unrest should she triumph over former President Donald J. Trump in a tightly contested race, especially if Mr. Trump or his supporters challenge the election results.

Keir Starmer and his wife, Victoria, celebrated his election victory in July. Throughout his campaign, Mr. Starmer adopted a cautious approach, deliberately avoiding contentious issues, which mirrors the strategy Ms. Harris appears to be employing as well.

“While these are distinct nations with unique political frameworks, there often seem to be striking parallels in their political journeys,” observed Steven Fielding, an emeritus professor of political history at the University of Nottingham.
