Edgar Bronfman Jr. Withdraws Bid for Paramount
Edgar Bronfman Jr. has officially abandoned his last-minute attempt to acquire Paramount Pictures, as he announced on Monday that his group would no longer pursue the deal. This decision comes just a day before the deadline for submitting a final offer for the entertainment giant, which is the parent company of CBS and MTV.
With Mr. Bronfman’s withdrawal, it appears that Paramount is on the brink of being acquired by Skydance, a burgeoning studio in Hollywood. Skydance has dedicated much of this year to engaging with Paramount, hoping to finalize a merger that has been in the works. In July, Skydance and Paramount reached an agreement valued at approximately $8 billion. However, that deal included a “go-shop” provision, permitting Paramount to explore other potential buyers during a specified timeframe.
In his statement, Mr. Bronfman expressed his gratitude for being part of the bidding process, stating that his group had informed a special committee of Paramount’s board of directors about the decision to withdraw their bid. He remarked that it was “a privilege to have the opportunity to participate” in such significant deal-making.
Bronfman emphasized his belief in the future prospects of Paramount, declaring, “While there may have been differences, we believe that everyone involved in the sale process is united in the belief that Paramount’s best days are ahead.” He extended his congratulations to the Skydance team and thanked the special committee and the Redstone family for their engagement throughout the go-shop phase.
In concluding his remarks, Mr. Bronfman referred to Paramount as “an extraordinary company,” noting its “unrivaled collection of marquee brands, assets, and people.”
