Exploring the Kahunira Trail in Kiambu County

As we ventured deeper into the lush forested backcountry of Kiambu County, Kenya, my wife, Kiki, and I found ourselves at the stunning third waterfall along the Kahunira trail. After nearly three hours of trekking, the refreshing sight of cascading water was a welcome reward. Our journey had begun in the lively market town of Githunguri, where we indulged in the sweet flavors of lady finger bananas and sampled a tangy local brew known as muratina, offered by friendly laborers at a nearby gravel quarry. The thrill of our adventure escalated as we took a daring shortcut over rust-flecked irrigation pipes that spanned a steep gorge adorned with sprawling tea plantations.

We were joined by a vibrant group of two dozen young Kenyans, all eager to embrace the spirit of adventure. This enthusiastic crowd had discovered the excursion through Lets Drift, an innovative outdoor recreation community dedicated to organizing weekly hikes, bike rides, and mountaineering escapades just outside of Nairobi. As we reached the shaded oasis of the waterfall, excitement filled the air. Some adventurous souls swiftly changed into swimsuits, executing impressive acrobatic dives from the boulders that framed the crystal-clear cascade pool. Laughter and splashes punctuated the atmosphere as others captured the moment with selfies, basking in the warm afternoon sun.

In a region of Africa where traditional tourism has often revolved around wildlife experiences rooted in a British colonial legacy, Lets Drift emerges as a refreshing alternative. This Kenyan-centric initiative seeks to not only promote outdoor recreation but also foster a sense of community among the burgeoning urban middle class of the country. The Kahunira trail itself presents unique challenges, including the exhilarating experience of walking across rust-flecked water pipes that span the gorge, a thrilling passage on our route to the waterfalls.

Founded in 2018 by the dynamic duo of Alex Kamau and Paul Njuguna, both hailing from the greater Nairobi area, Lets Drift has quickly become a beloved platform for adventure seekers. The organization attracts approximately 8,000 participants each year, offering a diverse range of activities such as hiking, e-biking, backcountry camping, and digital detox retreats. “Our mission is to make adventure more accessible and affordable for Kenyans,” Mr. Kamau passionately stated, highlighting the organization’s commitment to enriching lives through exploration and connection with nature.
