Young Activist Challenges Macron’s Approach to Governance
Explore how a passionate young activist confronts President Macron’s governance strategies, advocating for change and raising critical questions about youth engagement in politics and the future of France.
A Moment with President Macron
At just 17 years old, Amine Kessaci found himself in a remarkable position, seated close to French President Emmanuel Macron during the latter’s visit to Marseille to launch his second presidential campaign in 2021. Known for his top-down approach to policymaking, Mr. Macron laid out his ambitious plan to infuse substantial state funds into Marseille, aiming to revitalize the city’s economy and address its escalating violence.
Taking advantage of this rare opportunity, Kessaci, the son of Algerian immigrants, did not shy away from voicing his thoughts directly to the president. With a tone that was both calm and assertive, he challenged Mr. Macron to adopt a more inclusive approach in his decision-making process. “There is no point in coming with a plan from Paris, drafted on a plane or wherever else. You have to build it with us,” he urged, emphasizing the need for collaboration.
Although Mr. Macron did not engage with the substance of Kessaci’s comments, he did respond by asking about his age and offering a slight applause, acknowledging the young man’s passion.
Political Aspirations
Fast forward less than three years, and Kessaci took a significant step in his political journey by running for a seat in the National Assembly. He represented the Green Party as part of the left-wing New Popular Front coalition. However, his campaign faced a challenging opponent in Gisèle Lelouis, a 72-year-old member of the far-right National Rally party. In a closely contested election held in July, Kessaci lost by a narrow margin of just 835 votes.
This election resulted in a deadlock within the assembly, a situation that has yet to be resolved, leaving the formation of a new government in limbo. Kessaci’s experience highlights the complexities and challenges faced by young politicians in contemporary France.
In the end, Kessaci’s journey reflects both his determination to participate in the political process and the broader challenges that come with advocating for change in a polarized political landscape.
