Before the attacks on Sunday, tensions in the Middle East had been escalating for several weeks, particularly following the high-profile assassinations of senior leaders within the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah. These actions, notably the killings that occurred in July, intensified the longstanding and intricate conflict between Israel and Iran, which openly supports both Hamas and Hezbollah. Iran has issued threats of retaliation, raising alarms among global leaders. The Biden administration in the United States has been particularly vocal, urging all parties to exercise restraint to prevent a broader conflict from engulfing the region. Below are some of the significant developments that have transpired in recent months.

January 2: A Hamas Leader’s Killing in Beirut

On this date, Hamas accused Israel of orchestrating the assassination of Saleh al-Arouri, a prominent leader, along with two commanders from its military wing. The attack occurred in an explosion in a suburb of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Historically, this area had been relatively untouched by the cross-border violence that typically characterizes the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah—a powerful Lebanese militia that, similar to Hamas, is aligned with Iran. The killing of Mr. al-Arouri marked a notable escalation, as he was the first high-ranking Hamas official to be killed outside of the West Bank and Gaza in recent years. While Israeli officials refrained from making any comments regarding the incident, both Lebanese and U.S. officials attributed the attack to Israel.

January 6: Hezbollah’s Retaliation against Israel

In retaliation for the assassination of Mr. al-Arouri, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets targeting a small military base in northern Israel. Although Hezbollah claimed that the attack resulted in casualties, the Israeli military reported no injuries. In response, Israel conducted its own strikes within Lebanon. Analysts interpreted Hezbollah’s actions as a symbolic gesture rather than a significant escalation of hostilities, noting that the group fired approximately 40 rockets towards Mount Meron, an area that houses a military radar station.

April 1: Airstrikes in Damascus

Israel executed airstrikes that targeted part of the Iranian Embassy complex in Damascus, Syria. These strikes resulted in the deaths of three senior Iranian commanders and four officers involved in Iran’s covert operations. This attack marked one of the deadliest incidents in the ongoing shadow war between Israel and Iran, further heightening regional tensions that were already strained due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and hostilities involving Iranian-backed groups. Israeli officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the strikes but denied that the targeted building held diplomatic status.

April 14: A Barrage of Missiles and Drones against Israel

In a show of force, Iran retaliated for the airstrikes in Damascus by launching over 300 drones and missiles at Israel—making it the first overt attack on Israel from Iranian territory. The strikes were aimed at military installations and, although they caused minor damage and injured a young girl, Israel successfully intercepted the majority of the projectiles, with additional defenses provided by U.S. and Jordanian forces. Analysts observed that this carefully calibrated attack was communicated well in advance, indicating Iran’s intention to avoid mass casualties or a direct war.
