Honor Introduces Eye Tracking Technology

Chinese phone manufacturer Honor, a former sub-brand of Huawei, announced that it will introduce an innovative eye-tracking technology at the end of this month that will allow users to control their phones with eye movements. This technology, set to be launched on August 27, has been developed specifically to facilitate smartphone use for individuals with disabilities.

Honor positions this innovation as a feature that will revolutionize the smartphone industry and claims to be the first brand to integrate eye-tracking technology into a mobile operating system. Although this claim has yet to be verified by some sources, the company emphasizes in its statement that the primary motivation behind this development is “human-centered innovation.”

Innovations Coming with MagicOS 8.0

With the upcoming MagicOS 8.0 update, users will be able to easily open notifications and applications with simple eye movements. This technology is expected to provide significant convenience for individuals living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells and leads to loss of muscle control. In advanced stages of ALS, patients often find themselves only able to control eye movements. This indicates that Honor’s eye-tracking technology has the potential to create a revolutionary change in these individuals’ ability to interact with smartphones.

Not Limited to Eye Tracking

Honor also states that it will not be limited to eye-tracking technology. The company is also working on non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies that allow users to control their phones using brain electrical signals. Honor has announced that it has started testing this technology with ALS patients.

One of the leading figures in the ALS community and an advocate for AI-supported technologies, Bernard Muller, expressed the following on this matter: “Individuals fighting ALS are the greatest testament to human resilience, and I am proud to be part of this initiative to raise awareness of our community’s quiet determination. I hope that the transformative power of artificial intelligence encourages individuals with disabilities to express themselves in art, communication, and social movements.”

Although Honor has not yet shared the full list of devices that will receive this update, it has indicated that the Magic6 Pro will be among them.
