On Friday, divers from the Italian firefighter corps recovered the body of the last individual who had been missing following a violent storm that sank a luxury yacht off the Sicilian coast. This grim discovery marked a heartbreaking end to a prolonged search and dashed the dwindling hopes that any of the missing might have survived the ordeal.
The deceased, identified as Hannah Lynch, was just 18 years old and the daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also perished in the tragic sinking of the vessel. The family-owned yacht, named Bayesian—after the mathematical theorem that served as the foundation for Mike Lynch’s technology empire—had been hosting a celebratory gathering in honor of his recent victory in a high-profile fraud case.
Onboard the 180-foot yacht were a total of 10 crew members and 12 passengers, amidst which only 15 individuals survived the incident. Following the storm’s onset, the body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered on Monday just hours after the severe downpour struck the northwestern coast of Sicily, near the port of Porticello where the yacht was anchored.
The recovery of the six passengers trapped inside the submerged yacht proved to be more challenging, taking several days. Among those who tragically lost their lives were:
