Tragedy Strikes Off the Coast of Sicily

In a heartbreaking development, divers from Italy’s firefighter corps successfully recovered a fifth body on Thursday following the tragic sinking of a yacht earlier this week near the shores of Sicily. This incident leaves only one victim still unaccounted for.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially confirmed by Italian authorities, making it unclear which of the passengers, including the prominent British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, remains missing.

The ill-fated yacht, known as the Bayesian, was carrying a total of 10 crew members and 12 passengers when it encountered a sudden and severe downpour in the pre-dawn hours of Monday. Weather experts reported that the area was struck by intense winds and lightning, suggesting that the yacht may have been affected by turbulent air generated within a rapidly descending thunderstorm or possibly by a waterspout, akin to a tornado over water.

Among the passengers, 15 individuals managed to reach safety; however, the yacht’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was confirmed dead on Monday. Rescue teams successfully retrieved four of the six remaining bodies on Wednesday.

Efforts to locate the missing individuals have involved deep-sea divers from the Italian firefighter corps, who have been coordinating their operations with the local coast guard. They have utilized helicopters and rescue ships to reach the wreck, which has settled on its side approximately 165 feet below the ocean’s surface. The significant depth of the wreckage has restricted the divers’ time underwater, complicating and prolonging the search efforts.

As rescue teams managed to recover some of the bodies on Wednesday afternoon, they were brought ashore in body bags, drawing the attention of a crowd of reporters and onlookers who witnessed the somber scene.

Italian officials have identified the six individuals who were still missing from the yacht as:

  • Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah Lynch
  • Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International
  • His wife, Judy Bloomer
  • Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance
  • His wife, Neda Morvillo
