Health Diagnosis with Artificial Intelligence: The Power of Color and Conditions in the Tongue

A newly developed health artificial intelligence assistant can accurately assess your health just by examining your tongue. Medical experts designed this AI application to detect specific colors and symptoms on the tongue. The algorithm behind the AI is so effective that the application can identify the health conditions affecting the patient with a 98% accuracy rate.

This innovative AI emerged as part of a study detailed in an article published in Technologies magazine. Researchers conducted a comprehensive test by presenting 60 photos collected from educational hospitals in the Middle East to this algorithm. All the photos belonged to patients suffering from different health issues, such as respiratory diseases like COVID-19 and gastrointestinal problems.

5,200 Patients’ Tongues Examined

In these tests, the AI-powered health assistant was able to accurately identify which ailment the patients were suffering from by simply examining the color of their tongues. However, creating this advanced system was not as easy as it sounds. Researchers initially took a total of 5,200 photos of patients’ tongues and then added diagnostic information to these photos using six different machine learning algorithms. After completing the training process, the AI can now diagnose which tongue image corresponds to which disease with an accuracy of 98%.

Of course, we do not expect such applications to reduce the necessity of doctors in the medical field. However, the existence of such applications that assist doctors in making quicker decisions during diagnosis can enable more people to access healthcare services more easily.
