In a devastating incident, at least 28 pilgrims from Pakistan lost their lives in Iran when their bus overturned on Tuesday night. The bus was en route to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the pilgrims were headed to participate in the observance of a significant Shiite Muslim holiday known as Arbaeen. This two-day event, which begins on Sunday evening, attracts millions of worshippers annually and is recognized as one of the largest organized gatherings in the world.
The state-run news agency IRNA reported that in addition to the fatalities, at least 23 other passengers sustained injuries, with 14 of them in critical condition. Iranian authorities are currently coordinating efforts to repatriate the deceased and arrange for the injured to be flown back to Pakistan.
Many of the victims hailed from the Sindh Province, located in the southern part of Pakistan, as confirmed by local news reports and officials. Eyewitness accounts described a scene of chaos, with video footage aired on Iranian state television depicting a yellow and red bus lying on its side, its large wheels pointed skyward. The bus’s luggage compartments were flung open, and rescuers were seen using flashlights to sift through the debris in search of survivors.
The tragic accident occurred in Yazd, a province situated in central Iran. The journey from Pakistan to Karbala, through Iran, spans approximately 1,100 miles. As of now, the precise cause of the crash remains unclear, prompting investigations by local authorities.
