Incident Involving Thai Politician and Journalist Sparks Outrage

In a troubling incident that unfolded last week in Bangkok, a politician was seen surrounded by journalists while navigating a corridor. When a reporter posed a question, instead of responding appropriately, he unexpectedly raised his hand and struck her on the head multiple times before abruptly entering his vehicle and driving away.

This shocking encounter involved Duangthip Yiamphop, a reporter for the Thai Public Broadcasting Service, and Prawit Wongsuwan, a retired general and former deputy prime minister of Thailand. The video footage capturing this interaction has ignited widespread anger across the nation, particularly in a context where violence against women remains a pressing issue, and the military has repeatedly distanced itself from democratic principles.

In light of Mr. Prawit’s alarming behavior, there have been calls for the Thai Parliament to initiate an ethics inquiry into his conduct. According to Pukkamon Nunarnan, a member of Parliament, a parliamentary committee is scheduled to address this matter in an upcoming meeting on Thursday.

The Thai Public Broadcasting Service released a statement condemning Mr. Prawit’s actions as an act of intimidation that undermines the safety and well-being of journalists. The organization emphasized the professionalism of the journalist, stating:

  • “The journalist’s questions were presented with polite language and demeanor, addressing topics pertinent to the interview.”
  • “Being physically assaulted by the news source in this manner is completely unacceptable.”

This incident highlights the urgent need for a safer environment for journalists in Thailand, as well as the broader societal issue of violence against women.
