Celebrating a Millennium: Saint Stephen’s Day in Hungary
This year, Hungary marked over 1,000 years of independence with a spectacular fireworks display in Budapest, coinciding with the traditional Saint Stephen’s Day festivities. The event, characterized by an impressive array of drones, fireworks, and captivating voice-over narration, took place along a five-kilometer stretch of the iconic Danube River.
Local media reports indicate that the grand pyrotechnics show required a considerable investment of over €38 million. However, the celebrations faced an unexpected challenge due to inaccurate weather forecasts. Rain showers, which many had not anticipated, caused a delay in the event’s commencement, pushing back the start time by an hour. One spectator quipped to Euronews, “The meteorologists did not do a top job,” as onlookers struggled to keep dry under umbrellas amidst the drizzle.
Some attendees expressed concern regarding the substantial expenditure on the fireworks display. One individual commented that the funds could have been allocated more effectively, suggesting improvements in healthcare services, stating, “It doesn’t matter now.” Despite these sentiments, the festive atmosphere remained palpable.
In a noteworthy statement, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken extended his congratulations on Hungary’s public holiday. He also emphasized the importance of Hungary’s role as a 25-year NATO member and reminded the nation of its responsibilities within the alliance. He expressed hope for a strengthened relationship between the United States and Hungary, grounded in democratic values, shared security, and mutual prosperity. Blinken remarked, “That is what the deep friendship between our peoples and the rich history between our nations deserves.”
