Zelensky articulated this point during a speech to Ukrainian ambassadors stationed around the globe, stating, “The entire naïve and illusory concept of so-called red lines concerning Russia, which has heavily influenced some partners’ perceptions of the war, has crumbled over the past few days near Sudzha.” He was making reference to the western Russian town of Sudzha, which Ukrainian forces successfully captured last week, marking a significant milestone in the offensive.

For over two years, Washington has imposed restrictions on Ukraine’s use of the weapons it supplied, motivated by concerns that such actions could escalate tensions between Moscow and Western nations. However, following months of advocacy from Ukrainian officials, the United States and other NATO allies recently adjusted their policies, allowing Ukraine to target Russian territory.

Nonetheless, the Biden administration specified that Ukraine is permitted to use American-supplied arms only to strike military targets positioned a short distance within Russian borders.
